One word? When seven would do…

No one said it would be easy…

I could rant about today. There have been definite wobbly bits with Davies being taught about the ‘naughty step’ for the first time in his 4.5 years and more toys being confiscated (although he did ‘win’ them back) and Tarly fell over at group and grazed her knee. Not a bad graze but I just know it is the first stage of ‘summer of 2005 bad knee saga’ to rival ‘summer of 2004 bad knee saga’ of last year. You may recall she fell over at least 8 times on the same nearly healed knee with it only really healing once she was wearing tights for the winter. And this year folks, just to add to the general gore she picks too 😉

But let’s focus on the good stuff eh? This morning Davies wanted to do his Cat in the Hat workbook and did some fairly credible stuff in it in terms of letter recognition, working out that the first letter of the word changing meant he didn’t need to spell it all out, just change the sound at the front of the word he had spelt before (cat, hat, pat, sat etc being examples), they both did some copy drawing so I got out his ‘I can draw’ book which has been another of those ‘must have to sit collecting dust on the bookshelf’ purchases. He did some pretty good drawings of a duck, a dinosaur, a pig, and then did some of his current favourite which is rainbows drawn with about 15 pens all held together. There was some brio play, some Dora house play, some general looking at books and some watching of our Dr Seuss dvds.

Then group, which I confess to not really being in the mood for. Infact as I didn’t actually have the keys if we had not been having a drama teacher in for a session today which I wanted Davies to participate in and also didn’t want to abandon Jenny I would probably not gone.

As it happened I was glad I did. We had two new families – one of whom was the woman I met at TT2 last week with her husband so we had a longer chat. The drama went really well. The guy was very pleasant and somehow managed to engage 14 children with an age range of 4 (Davies was the youngest) to 13. He was really good with them all, not patronising but really on their level and he remembered names (well he certainly remembered Davies’!) and seemed to manage to give each of them some individual attention . He also hung around for a bit chatting afterwards which was nice. He complimented on me on Davies (said he was ‘very cute’ 🙂 ) and Davies thought he was pretty cool too, so that was a nice moment. I also had a compliment from new lady (who is aiming to find her way to MP sometime soon) about how confident and articulate my two are so I was all aglow. Topped off by lovely Nikki (also on MP) telling me I’d lost weight, so overall I’m very glad we did end up going. 🙂

The kids all then milled around a bit, Tarly fell over and as scoubidous had been brought out and I could see where the game with them was going (think whips!) and Tarly was asking to go home I snuck off early while the going was still good!

I wanted to get a few bits to make packed lunch for tomorrow so had thought we’d pop in Sainsburys and as Ady was working in the local B&Q next door I thought we’d surprise him. It’s the store that I worked in for 6 years but I think I’ve only been in there once since we moved home – it just feels too weird to be walking round somewhere which was like a sort of second home to me from the ages of 16-22 and met my husband so I tend not to go there.

Anyway we found him in the outside garden centre with a woman who has worked there forever so has known us both for years. She was staggered at how much like me the kids are and then asked the classic question about Davies starting school. Ady tends to not mention it unless he is really pushed to and clearly had not done so to her. I took a deep breath and said ‘well actually the children won’t be going to school’ and Davies butted in to say ‘we are home educated’!!!! 🙂 She looked totally taken aback, asked the classic question about socialisation (yawn!) and then seemed to recover and told me that I had always been wasted at B&Q and would be much better as a teacher! (I know!). We’d only popped in so we left shortly afterwards, collected the food shopping we needed and came home. Ady apparantly answered a few more questions on the subject after we left and she ended up (at least to his face) being quite supportive and saying it was a good idea.

A better afternoon at home with the kids both trying really hard to be good – which is a definite improvement, hence Davies getting his teddies back. I think despite having people to visit yesterday we were just stuck in the house all day which made it stressy and as the rest of the week is planned to spend at other people’s houses instead I think it will have a good end to the week.

Spent ages trying to do part of my online course which I just cannot get to work (Jax, may well drop you an email on that one, I think it’s something you could explain in Nic friendly terms!) and am still low level pondering about other stuff. Can’t wait for Kessingland to continue some of the chats I started with various people at HESFES.

  2. Apart from the scoobies being taken home in handfuls it actually stayed quite calm once I got them all playing What’s the Time Mr Wolf while everyone else, directed by me, cleared away in time. I jangled keys menacingly at 3.29 and was out of the door by 3.30. Mind you, I think they all hate me as everyone else was arranging to meet up and no-one wanted to meet us!!! Have forty quid for the tin, so sorry about my DH being a twat which I’ll drop over with the keys. I wasn’t in the mood today either and if I hadn’t arranged the drama would have been tempted not to go. I wonder if we’re both finding the ongoing responsibility a bit of a PITA?
