One word? When seven would do…

when he was 10

We’ve asked a lot of Davies this year. By the time he had this tenth birthday (celebrated in now traditional fashion with friends in a camping field and family in a restaurant) we were in the throes of planning our Wondering Wanderers adventure for the coming year and he already knew that the year would be unlike no other so far.

Tenth birthday gifts and Christmas presents a few months later were all very geared towards the coming adventure and the first half of being ten was very much about getting rid of possessions, planning to live a totally different lifestyle and preparing to say goodbye to home, friends, family, stuff.

The second half of ten has been living the adventure, by far the biggest challenge any of us has ever faced before and a big demand on a child. But Davies has thrived on it. He has become more responsible, more forward thinking, prepared to try new things, cope with uncertainty and learnt so many new skills from the experience.

Davies loves Pirates of the Caribbean, Lego, drawing, DS / PSPing and still has a very active imagination and spends hours creating games and worlds and stories. Davies is missing friends this year and thrives on being part of a group, partiuclarly when he is the leader.

Davies is brave, intrepid, sensitive and caring. He rarely cries but when he does it will be because of an injustice or because he is upset with himself. Doing the right thing is important to him and he loathes the idea that someone thinks ill of him. He is certainly not above playing the annoying big brother but he is far more often cast in the role of caring, thoughtful big brother, protector and carer of Scarlett.

I feel Davies growing more independant and bigger and more mature every day, traces of the little baby and clingy toddler are now harder to summon, I’m more likely to see future echoes of the man he will become than the small child he once was. But that man looks like someone I am going to be so very proud to call my son. What my boy lacks in height he makes up for in character. I am so very lucky to be the person he calls Mummy and still comes to for a cuddle when only I will do.
