Make fudge. I’ve never made it before and looking around the internet I’ve read various horror stories to do with fudge and it’s making (horror stories as in the fudge doesn’t set or it burns or stuff like that, not horror stories as in Killer Fudge Goes On Rampage type things, although I did once have that bad experience with the salt dough so I don’t want to write off the potential for evil fudge). But it’s the only gift type item I have ingredients for and I was given some home made fudge at the weekend at it was lovely, thoughtful and will travel perfectly to it’s destination.
Well the good news is I can indeed make fudge 🙂 I wonder if it’s a bit like making pastry – you either have the knack for it or you don’t. Well anyway it tastes nice (very sweet), it looks okay, it’s setting fine and unless you see a blog post in the next 24 hours entitled ‘when good fudge goes bad’ it’s safe to assume it remained that way. 🙂
Make mince pies. We currently have a rather overwhelming volume of mincemeat here – three large tupperware containers full to be precise. I rather foolishly made it not vegetarian so it is unsuitable to put in jars and give to people as another home made gift. But I do need to make some today – some to take to book group tonight and more just for having – and if I am suitably driven I might make enough to freeze some so I don’t have to make any more for the rest of the week.
I made a couple of hundred mince pies – used up one and a half tubs of the mincemeat and a whole bag of flour. And the children helped with cutting out and painting tops with milk. And we talked about pastry making and good cutting techniques etc. so it was positively educational ;).
Make container for fudge – assuming fudge turns out ok and doesn’t go either way of the horror story fudge possibles.
Haven’t done that yet. I have lost (well actually I’m blaming Ady for having lost as I’m pretty sure I know where it was and he recently ‘tidied’ that area up) my rainbow bag. I can’t find it anywhere and am all bereft without it, but when I was looking I did find a pair of jeans that is beyond repair to wear so I have a bit of a plan to chop them up and make a suitably Nic-like bag from them. Will post pics if it works. I also found £1.37 while I was going through the wardrobe in pockets and other handbags which all but doubles the money left until payday on Thursday :). So I’m bag-making instead of box making, but I’ll come back to box making tomorrow as I can’t post the fudge until Thursday anyway.
Watch films – it feels like that sort of day.
Am now sitting down with cleaned up kitchen, all washing done and hung out to dry (I know you worry about my washing to the point of obsession. Or is that me who does that? Yeah it might be me), think I might have another cup of tea and maybe a mince pie before I start sewing. Oh and the children are watching War Game which ties in nicely with both the recent war stories I’ve been reading to Davies and Christmas generally although the combination of their innocent observations on the craziness coupled with my own childhood memories of ‘Pipes of Peace’ and asking similar questions are making me rather teary.
we’re doing chocolate fudge and biscuits this year 🙂 But not until the weekend.
fudge has always worked here – though I often wonder whether its going to be toffee or fudge. English [crack] toffee works well and is easy to make too.
Oh no hope you find rainbow bag, I like rainbow bag!
Pmsl at the killer salt dough, glad to hear the fudge turned out ok.
