Child led Thursday

I had a really horrible dream last night where Scarlett was kidnapped and a note left behind to say I didn’t deserve to have her. Clearly it was just a dream and it’s not something I believe but it was one of those horrible ones that stayed with me well into waking hours. Fortunately I have children who are very receptive to cuddles and being stroked and adored which was what I needed to do to make me feel better.

I’d already vowed to be offline this morning as I was getting so pissed off with the network thing. Davies was playing Willy Wonka on xbox and finished the game – he’s just got the idea of games being something you can complete rather than just play and is suddenly working to the end of various games on xbox and ds. Scarlett and I chatted while he was doing that and she showed me some pictures she’d drawn of tigers and foxes which are her current ‘thing’ to draw. She ‘s getting pretty good at them. Then they swapped over and Scarlett played Barbie Wild horses for a while on xbox (with regular assistance from Davies on the tricky bits). Davies and I potted up a venus fly trap kit he’d got last Christmas and then made a shaker maker tardis which he later painted once it was dry. We decided to do some baking (we couldn’t remember the last time Davies and I had done baking, it’s always Tarly who helps me usually) so made some snickerdoodles at his request. Then we had a game of battleships.

In between all this I did some laundry, put the chicks outside, got some beef in the slow cooker with some red wine and stock ready for beef pie for dinner later and copied some recipes into my notebook from a couple of cookery books I have out on loan from work and really need to return.

We had lunch and watched a couple of episodes of Growing up Wild which we have on loan from the library. I think it’s aimed at a slightly younger audience but had plenty of information for them to take in. There were little quizzes at the end of each episode and we supplemented lots of the information with stuff we already knew.

Then we went to the stables to meet up with Julie for some pony riding. On the way we listened to some ‘Hooked on Classics’ – Davies is on a real classical music kick at the moment although he still insists he doesn’t want to start learning to play an instrument yet. Julie’s Mum was there to hold Lorna today so Julie was unhampered by baby wearing and able to really go for it with getting the kids riding. We set up a little school with six posts and a mounting block in the field.

Davies rode first and just did fantastically. He’s really got the hang of steering, getting Honey going and stopping and everything. He rode off lead the whole time and really enjoyed it.

Then it was Scarlett’s turn. She is just awesome, has great control of the pony and just loves every single moment. Check out the grin on her face here:

While they rode the others were playing on the muck heap building it up and then leaping down, daredevil style. It looked like a lot of fun and of course they got completely filthy!

that’s a giant calculator in Jack’s hand, he was doing ‘plus one’ for the whole time we were there to see how high he could get 😆

They had to strip off before I’d let them back in my car to drive home and I chucked them straight in the bath when we got home. They had dinner while watching some more Growing Up Wild and then we started reading Alice in Wonderland at bedtime.
