My pc really does seem to be dying. I’ve run all of the various system tools which seem to have made it run faster but it still keeps switching itself off. I now dimly recall hearing an odd noise from it last week and have decided, in my capacity of total computer know-nothing- that the fan has gone. 🙂
So, there I sat, pondering how on earth to deal with this until I can get someone who truly does know what they’re doing to have a look at it and suddenly inspiration struck. If I get my old laptop out and connect to the internet with that, transfer the broadband thingy across to it and the wireless broadcaster doobry then hey presto, Bobs the bloke related to your father and alls well that ends well, I might just be able to carry on using IM, blogging and emailing with my shiny new laptop from the lounge.
And d’you know what? It only bloody worked! And I only bloody managed to sort it out all by myself. Hurrah for me 🙂
Very impressive!
Hurrah to you 🙂
Made me laugh because I decided last week that an odd noise from my pc must surely be the fan!
Well done 🙂 Though a fan is an easy thing to change by yourself, and you probably have just enough PC world vouchers left to buy it, if you wanted to get your desktop going again. I’m confused though, as my desktop doesn’t need to be on for me to have wireless elsewhere in the house. It’s only the box thing, which sits all by itself in another room that I need to have on. It’s just connected to a phone socket and a plug, not the PC.
Some routers do have to go through the main pc though i think 🙂
Very clever though, i am impressed. We had to take Max’s pooter to the doctor the other day. It was no longer responding to self administered home-e-opathy!
yeah thats the plan Joyce, spend the vouchers and get it fixed when I get Frazer to confirm that that is what’s wrong with it.
My broadband must be older and less clever than yours though as it needs to be going through a computer to connect, as does the wireless signal sender thingy.
Just asked Bob what the problem was with ours, as it had exactly the same symptoms as yours, and it was the power supply box, inside the tower, rather than the fan. But it took him less than as hour to fix, and he says the part cost £45 from PC world. So hopefully yours will be as simple.:-) Broadband only hit this area about 18 months ago, so it’s still all very new here :-), and my wirelss stuff is only a few months old. I do have a little matchbox sized box thing that needs to sit beside the desktop, and I can’t get wireless to the desktop unless that is on, but it’s on the same plug supply as the actual computer, so when the computer is off at the wall, that thingy (don’t know what it is, Chris told me to buy it so i did) is off as well. But so long as the bigger box thing beside the phone is on, then the wireless works. I’m so technical 🙂
It’ll be a wireless router at a guess Joyce, quite useful bits of kit if you want to have a home network 🙂
Oh excuse me I’ve obviously wandered into the ‘wireless women’ forum by mistake.
Glad to hear you’re still connected though.
I think Nic’s is an access point rather than a router.
Joyce’s little thing is the wireless adapter that allows the desktop to access the network. The router runs the network outwith the pc.
I knew you would know what I had, Chris. And very well it all works as well 🙂
