This morning we’re all up very early, so far we have Freddie (yellow), Punzel (yellow) an unnamed black chick who is mine to christen and number four is another black one in the process of hatching. Egg number five has cracks so by lunchtime we should have our full hatch. 5 out of 6 not bad given the first success rate of nil.

Later today we’ll transfer them into a box with a brooder lamp, some food and water and start hatching (boom boom!) plans about what to do with them. And no jokes about cranberry sauce at the back there just yet! 😆
I like unnamed-black-one. You should’ve seen Claudia’s face when I showed them to her!
My kids equally stunned and excited. I didn’t know you could get black ones (not my forte obviously).
5 is quite a lot to keep though, surely?! I’d consider keeping a couple, but your garden would just be covered in chicken shit if you keep all of them! Can you train them to poo in one place? I guess it might make good compost … pmsl, I obviously don’t know anything about it either!!
Still very excited for you though, it’s fab 🙂
I even dreamt about them hatching last night! They look really cute, do they sleep quietly at night?
I think unnamed black one is going to be called ‘Wobble’. Ady is thinking about what to name newly hatched second black one. Final egg has large cracks and audible cheeping.
We’d have to have a proper henhouse type affair which we’d need to be sensible about the amount of chicken shit clearing and who would be doing it. Well ok we all know Ady would be doing it but he’d need to be prepared for that. No idea what sort of mortality rate there is for chicks – just cos we have 4 nearly 5 now I don’t know if that will remain, there seem to be loads of possible problems looking on the net.
They are VERY noisy, you wouldn’t want them in a room you were trying to sleep in. Infact we’ve not decided quite where we are going to put them when we take them out of the incubator. Candle seems to be quite interested in them at the moment…
