I’ve had the verdict from the insurance company about my ill fated laptop. I’ve been offered £900 worth of PC World vouchers to replace it.
They’ve recommended a HP one as the same spec wise or I can go and choose a different one if I wish.
Have no extra money to put towards it, obviously 😉
Was wondering about a mac but I do use MS Word quite a bit – the CV work has to be in that format so I need to have it really. I use my current laptop for storing pictures on although I could use the PC for that instead, it obviously needs to pick up the wireless connection at home or away and blue tooth would be nice. My current laptop is fairly large which was fine at the time of purchase but a smaller one would be nice I think.
Anything to avoid / particularly look for would be much appreciated advice 🙂
You should get something okay in PC World for that i should think… can you hang on till the New Year Sales? Might get more for your money 😉
ibook with MS word should come to less than that 😉
At the risk of opening the great debate again, why were you thinking about a Mac? In all Sarah & Steve’s arguments, I don’t remember either of them saying just what was so much better about them (apart from about operating stability, with which I don’t have a problem, and fewer viruses, with which I also don’t have a problem).
STEVE’s arguments!!!
It just looks better 🙂
but can you get macs in pcworld? could be a deciding factor!
oh phew, you can!
What insurance is this? Why are you being given vouchers?
TBH any laptop for less than £1k is going to be a compromise when compared with a desktop machine costed at half the price.
The Ibooks have the advantage of being small, light, good battery life, exceedingly quiet in operation. If you are going to use it for email, browsing, word etc it is probably a pretty good value bet, so long as you don’t find the OS irritating.
I think the only PC laptop I would consider from the PCWorld website is:

“It looks better”??? C’mon, I’d expect better from a car seller 😉
See, even C can come up with much more convincing pros than you two! Although I think I would find it irritating.
Yeah but clearly Steve is the perfect example of Sarah preferring looks to actual functionality and the like….
S knocked the laptop off the arm of the sofa and it killed the wireless card thingy which in turn has damaged the motherboard (I should make it clear I typed that sentence without an inkling of what it means!). So PC world, who are the insurance companies nominated pc repair / replacement place came out to look at it and determine whether it should be repaired or replaced.
I learnt today that they have deemed replacement as the more viable option and I was offered this as a replacement with the same spec as my own:

which they can either deliver to me in 4 weeks or send vouchers in 2 working days to go and get from a store direct – or use to choose an alternative.
My original one cost £1600 from Evesham but tbh I have no idea what or why – I just went in, told them what I wanted to use it for and that is what they sold me 😉
The mac looks quite pretty, seems small and Sarah and Ros seem pretty happy with theirs – over and above that I had no real reason for considering one..
But why doesn’t the insurance give you cash – having to use vouchers at PC world is really a bit shit. Does it say in the policy that they have the right to choose how to replace it?
That one is certainly more powerful than an Ibook, but it’s a trade-off between portability etc and power, unless you spend £1,500 plus. Don’t think the Ibook has bluetooth by the way.
actually I think the new ones do – I thought Ros said hers has – mine certainly hasn’t. Could be wrong on that though …
